OVERVIEW - OUR FUTURE PRINCIPAL ENGINEER
FRAYT is seeking a Principal Engineer who can operate as both a deep technical contributor and a technical mentor. This role requires extensive experience building enterprise-grade, scalable systems and someone who is equally comfortable writing production code and elevating the technical capabilities of engineers around them. You'll report to the Sr. Director of Engineering and play a critical role in shaping our technical foundation and engineering culture as we scale.
We're at an inflection point where the technical decisions we make now will determine our ability to scale to enterprise customers and handle significantly higher transaction volumes. This is an opportunity to build something that is both technically interesting and economically viable.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical Leadership & Execution
- Architect and build scalable infrastructure supporting core transaction flows, messaging systems, and data pipelines
- Write significant amounts of production code—this is a hands-on role where you ship real features and systems
- Make critical architectural decisions that balance immediate needs with long-term scalability
Technical Mentorship
- Mentor engineers through complex technical problems via pairing, code review, and architectural guidance
- Help engineers understand the why behind technical decisions, not just the what
- Lead by example by staying visible and working alongside the team
Required Experience
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, with deep expertise in data systems, infrastructure, or platform design
- Demonstrated experience building and operating systems at enterprise scale; you can speak to specific metrics such as requests per second, data volumes, transaction flows, and SLAs you've owned
- Proven track record of designing foundational infrastructure that supports core business operations
- Recent, substantial hands-on technical work; you must have written production code in the last 12–18 months
- Experience working with and mentoring engineers at various skill levels, with concrete examples of teaching through complex problems
- Strong verbal communication, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail
- Multi-language proficiency (not dogmatic about tech choices)
